EL POBLE
Good people from everywhere,
Arenys de Munt, sheltered by the valley of the Riera (the dry river bed) which, from Sobirans, overlooks the sea, is a millennial town. Inhabited since the Neolithic period, it has Iberian remains and we find the first documentary news about it in 878, when St. Martí d´Arenys is cited at the Council of Troyes. Until 1599, the town extended to the sea, but in this year its seaside neighbourhood, the current Arenys de Mar, segregated from it.
Near the coast, which softens the temperatures, and very near the mountains and the Montnegre-Corredor Natural Park, Arenys de Munt offers you its richness of landscapes as one of its main assets.
We are hard-working people who cultivate craft activities and have an agrarian and industrial tradition. We are very proud of our lacemakers: in 2006, Arenys de Munt will host the Catalan Lacemakers´ Gathering.
The Esbart Dansaire (dance group) of the Centre Moral has researched our folklore heritage and has taken traditional dance to Japan, Europe and many parts of Catalonia. Our giants are 20 years old and have been to many places. This summer, they have been to Germany. We have a municipal radio station since more than twenty years ago and we opened a television station some years ago. The Amics per l´Art (Friends for Art) give us constant demonstrations of their elaborate works.
Our sporting people have given us a lot of joy and are an example of excelling. The popular march through our area gathers on the first Sunday of October each year.
The senior citizen´s club invites its members to a lot of activities in training, entertainment and tourism. The local gastronomy is varied but we would like to highlight the relleno (apple stuffed with meat, chocolate or other ingredients) which many of us eat during our Festa Major (the main town festival held in November) and the delicious cirera d´en Roca (Roca´s cherry).
One of the characteristics of our town is the wealth of associations and the large amount of people who work in them voluntarily and generously with the only intention of making Arenys de Munt a lively town.
You will feel welcomed and we will make you feel at home.
